Forillon National Park of Canada lies at the
outer tip of the Gaspesie peninsula, in eastern
Quebec. It is a mountainous region that extends
into the Gulf of the St Lawrence. This park,
established in 1970, has a coastline framed by
soaring limestone cliffs, pebbles beaches and rocks
carved by the sea. The geography of Forillon didn't
allow farming on good quality soil everywhere. But
at Anse au Griffon, it was possible, especially
along the inland axis formed by the valley -the
portage-.
Today, after all the inhabitants were
expropriated, this green valley is probabbly the
best place in eastern Quebec where to watch and
photograph the black bears.
I have spent a week in Forillon in early June
2008. Then I went to Gaspesie National Park. I
stayed there a week for hiking in the Chic-Chocs
mountains. Some sections of the park are accessible
only by backpacking. The trail that crosses the
park from east to west is part of the Appalachian
trail, an extension of the celebrated American
Appalachian trail. Gaspesie National Park and
surroundings have also a reputation as an excellent
place for viewing moose.
